Field Trip & Chapter Meeting / Program – Saturday, 19 March 2016

The next meeting of the John W. Sellars – Lebanon Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will be Saturday, 19 March 2016 at 10:30 AM in Cabin 13 at Cedars of Lebanon State Park. We will be watching the second half of Danny Shelton’s documentary film  A Century of Birds: 100 years of the Tennessee Ornithological Society.

tn_laguardo_mapBefore the meeting we will visit some good birding spots around Old Hickory Lake looking for ducks and early spring migrants. We will begin at Laguardo Recreation Area at 7:30 AM. The Laguardo Recreation Area is located at 7790 Highway 109, Lebanon, TN (GPS: 36.289943, -86.446714).  Click here for a map Laguardo Recreation Area Map  Stephen Zipperer will then lead us to several more birding hot spots around the lake including: Tyree Access, Davis Corner Access, Cedar Creek Access, and if time allows, Shutes Branch Recreation Area. We will wrap up the birding about 9:30 AM and head to Cedars of Lebanon State Park for the meeting.

bird-watching-birdwatcher1Anyone interested in birding is welcome to participate in this outing. You do not have to attend the meeting to participate in the field trip, but we hope you will. Bring a sack lunch for after the meeting, and find out what everyone is seeing at their favorite birding spots.

Cabin 13 at cedars of Lebanon State ParkDirections to Cabin 13:  Once you enter the park through the main entrance continue on past the park office. When you come to the split in the road, bear to the right on W.P.A. Road, then continue on past the Cedar Lodge,  and past the parking lot for the nature center. Look for the gravel drive on your left (just before the playground equipment). If you cross the Cave Creek bridge you have gone too far. TOS Annual Meeting at Reelfoot State Park – 6-8 May 2016

Attention Tennessee Birders!

Don’t miss the 2016 TOS Annual Meeting at Reelfoot State Park – 6-8 May 2016

The Memphis chapter invites all TOS members to the Spring Meeting, to be held May 6, 7 and 8, 2016 at Reelfoot Lake State Park. Ellington Hall has been reserved for meeting registration and a Friday night reception, as well as committee meetings, board of directors’ meeting and dinner on Saturday night.

Saturday night’s dinner will be catered by Blue Bank Fish House and Grill. Dinner cost is $20 per adult and $10 for children. For the Saturday evening dinner program we will learn all about the Greater Prairie Chicken restoration project in our sister state of Missouri from Wildlife Biologist Matt Hill.

Depending on the weather, Reelfoot State Park will offer canoe trips on Saturday morning and pontoon boat rides on Saturday afternoon. Cost is $10 per person for each morning and afternoon option.

This fee should be paid to Reelfoot State Park on the day of the trip.  There will be field trips to local hotspots, including Walnut Log Road, Black Bayou, Long Point and at the Reelfoot Lake State Park Headquarters.
