The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is conducting a statewide colonial waterbird survey in 2016 and they need your help. TWRA recently conducted aerial surveys of the major reservoirs and rivers throughout the state to document locations of colonial waterbird colonies (i.e. herons, cormorants, egrets, etc.). They are now in the process of compiling a list of all known waterbird colonies in the Tennessee that have been documented by groups and individuals. If you know of the location of a colonial waterbird colony please contact David Hanni (david.hanni@tn.gov). The information provided will help document a more comprehensive picture of the status and distribution of colonial waterbirds throughout the state.
So while you’re out and about this spring looking for migrants, or boating or fishing on TN many rivers and lakes please take note of any waterbird colonies…the latitude and longitude would be great, but directions or location name will also work. Then send the information to David. Also spread the word among non-birders you know. The more eyes the better out there looking and reporting. This is a great opportunity for some citizen science as well as a cooperative partnership.
